Antrim was one of the six old counties of Northern Ireland. The new
district is just a small part of the old county.
The new districts of Moyle, Ballymoney, Ballymena, Larne,
Newtownabbey, Carrickfergus, Belfast and Lisburn were part of the old county.
It is an agricultural district, with Lough Neagh and the River Bann in the
west, and the Lagan valley in the south. The Antrim Mountains in the east
reach the coastline in many places. Tiny Antrim town is the chief town
of the new district, and is famous for its linen.
