Avon is a new administrative area formed in 1974 and containing parts of
Gloucestershire and Somerset. It covers 519 square miles. There
are limestone hills in the east and south extending from the Cotswolds and the
Mendips respectively, but the most dramatic limestone is at Clifton where the
river Avon has cut a magnificent gorge. The area contains good motorway links
as the M4 and M5 meet north of Bristol. The population is to a lagre extent
concentrated to the city of Bristol. Bath is noted for its Roman spa
and fine buildings, and Weston-super-Mare is a popular coastal
resort.
