Bedfordshire is a small county north of London.
The southern part of the county includes some of the uplands of the Chilterns,
while the flat plains of the north resemble the peaty tens. Fifty-eight per
cent of the land is used for arable crops, and farming occupies a tiny percentage
of the population. Bedford the county town on the Great
Ouse, once a Roman station, manufactures farm machinery, and Luton,
in the south, is a growing industrial centre, concerned with vehicle
production and the older-established hat-making industry.
